Overview:
Following the success of their GP40s, Rio Grande ordered its first of the upgraded units in 1972 and received its first 35 units by the end of 1974. Modeled as delivered in striking black and orange speed lettering paint, these will stand out even more with their nose-mounted Gyrolites! The Phase 1A models feature the common early production spotting features and tri-color class lights. Used frequently on priority trailer trains, they even showed up on occasion as power for the Ski Train.
