This version of the oft-modified M113 carrier was produced from 1979 and had updates based upon U.S. experience in Vietnam. Upgrades were made not only to the drivetrain and steering system, but also to the cooling and suspension setups. In addition, there were optional external fuel tanks and capacity for the installation of smoke dischargers, while the trim vane was enlarged. The M113A2 was a dependable servant in the Gulf War, in which it had Combat Identification Panels (CIP) installed to avoid friendly fire incidents.
